Mini Cabrio Automatic Gearbox Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Mini Cabrio is experiencing issues with the automatic gearbox, including slipping, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. The check engine and transmission indicator lights are on, and error codes suggest a problem with the automatic transmission converter, specifically the lock-up clutch. The suspected issue is confirmed to be a fault in the torque converter's lock-up clutch, leading to a costly repair but resulting in smooth shifting once resolved.

Grinding is present, plus error stored in the error memory. You mentioned a 'converter fault' – was it the lock-up clutch specifically? And did you have similar symptoms on your automatic gearbox, like unclean shifts?

Yep, lock-up clutch in the torque converter was precisely the culprit. The symptoms sound identical – especially the inconsistent shifts. If you're getting grinding too, and the error codes point that way, I'd say it's time to get it properly diagnosed at a workshop. Don't delay it too long, or you risk further damage.

Just wanted to update on this. You were spot on. My suspicions about the torque converter were confirmed. Ended up costing me 2120€ for a transmission repair. Ouch. But at least my Mini Cabrio, with almost 200000 km on the clock, is shifting smoothly again. Thanks for the input!

That sounds suspiciously like what happened with my Mini a while back – though mine's a different year. Check engine light, transmission light, and some nasty slippage. Did you notice any grinding when it shifted? Error codes are a dead giveaway, too. I'm leaning towards a converter fault as well.
