Mini Cabrio automatic transmission issues

Alright, so my 2010 Mini Cabrio is giving me some serious grief. It's got almost 200000 km on it. The problem is with the automatic transmission, specifically the parking position. Basically, the engine won't start, the check engine light is on, and the gearbox is shifting really rough. I had the error memory read, and it's pointing towards a defective control unit. Does that sound right? I'm looking at a 1000€ repair bill, which is kinda scary.

Sounds like a real headache! I had a similar thing happen with my old Volvo, although it wasn't the park position specifically. The symptoms were almost identical – engine light, weird shifting, wouldn't start sometimes. For me, it turned out to be a faulty transmission sensor messing with the whole system. Have you checked the transmission sensor and gear linkage? Maybe get the error codes read again?

Thanks for the quick reply! Transmission sensor, huh? Where exactly is that located, and is it something I could potentially check myself, or is it better left to the pros? Also, what exactly do you mean by 'gear linkage'?

Yeah, sounds very familiar! With the Volvo, it was a pain to diagnose. By gear linkage I mean the physical connection between the gear stick and the transmission. If that's loose or damaged, it can cause issues. But honestly, if you're getting control unit errors and the symptoms are that bad, it's probably best to take it to a workshop. They'll be able to properly diagnose the control unit and transmission failure and check the park brake.

Big thanks for the help! It was indeed the control unit, just like you suspected. Ended up costing around 1000€ to get it sorted at the shop. Runs like a dream now!
