Mini Cabrio Diesel Automatic Transmission Troubles

I'm at my wit's end with my 2014 Mini Cabrio Diesel! The automatic transmission is acting up like crazy. The automatic transmission doesn't shift as usual, and the transmission indicator light keeps popping on. Sometimes, the automatic transmission is even in emergency mode! It feels like the automatic gearbox is fighting me every step of the way. Could this be a transmission oil issue? I heard that undervoltage in the car can sometimes cause these problems. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Mini Cabrio Diesel is experiencing automatic transmission issues, including erratic shifting, a transmission indicator light, and emergency mode activation. The problem may be linked to worn transmission oil or undervoltage affecting the gearbox. A similar case was resolved by checking and replacing the transmission oil, which improved the shifting performance. The suggested solution is to have the transmission oil checked and replaced at a workshop to prevent further damage.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Woah, that sounds rough! I had a similar issue with my Mini a while back. Transmission performance was all over the place. Does it feel like a slipping transmission at all? Could be the transmission oil, especially with the transmission indicator light coming on. When was the last time you checked the transmission oil level? Or had the transmission oil changed?

Slipping transmission is a good way to describe it! I haven't checked the transmission oil myself, to be honest. I wouldn't even know where to start. You mentioned you had a similar problem – was it definitely the transmission oil for you? And if so, what did you do about it?

Yep, sounds like a classic case of worn transmission oil causing havoc with the automatic gearbox. My Mini had similar symptoms. The implausible shifting behavior is a telltale sign. Given the low mileage, it's unusual, but undervoltage can definitely accelerate wear. I'd recommend getting it checked out at a workshop ASAP before it causes more damage. Don't keep driving it like that!

Thank you so much for your advice! I took my Mini Cabrio to the workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed the transmission oil. They said low voltage probably messed with the automatic gearbox, causing the oil to degrade prematurely. They replaced the hydraulic fluid, and the shifting is smooth as butter now. The bill came to 240€, which is a relief compared to a new gearbox!
