Mini Cabrio diesel preheating lamp issue

I am experiencing a persistent issue with my 2010 Mini Cabrio diesel. The preheating lamp remains illuminated even after starting, and an error code is present in the system memory. Given the vehicle's symptoms, I suspect a defective glow plug. I have noticed some rough idle, particularly during cold starts, and the engine light is now constantly on. Could this be related to a single failing glow plug, or should I consider other potential causes, such as faulty wiring?

Sounds like a glow plug issue, yeah. I had something similar happen with my old Peugeot, though it was petrol, so no glow plugs, obviously. I had a faulty coolant temperature sensor. The engine thought it was always cold, so it was dumping extra fuel in. Did you check the coolant temperature sensor? That can cause similar symptoms and throw an error code.

Interesting point. The coolant temperature sensor does that typically trigger a specific fault code, or could it potentially manifest as a generic 'engine misfire' or 'preheating system' error? I'm trying to understand if that might be a contributing factor, or perhaps a separate issue altogether.

In my case, the Peugeot threw a specific code for the coolant sensor, but I suppose it could manifest in other ways. Given you're getting a preheating lamp error specifically, and you have a diesel, glow plugs are the prime suspect. Given the symptoms are quite prominent, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. It's often hard to diagnose electrical problems yourself, so maybe better to get an expert in.

Just got the Mini back from the shop. Indeed, it was the glow plugs. 440€ lighter, but at least the engine light is off.
