Mini Cabrio Diesel Transmission Issues

Alright, I'm officially stumped. My beloved 2016 Mini Cabrio Diesel is giving me fits. The paddle shifters are completely unresponsive, the gearbox is slipping like crazy and shifting unreliably. I'm even getting grinding noises now. The paddle shifters are slow to respond, and the whole thing went into emergency mode. Of course, there's an error stored in the error memory. From what I've gathered, it seems the transmission control unit is the culprit. Am I on the right track here, and is a 1000€ transmission repair bill a realistic expectation, or is there anything I could check before?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Mini Cabrio Diesel is experiencing transmission issues, including unresponsive paddle shifters, slipping gears, grinding noises, and emergency mode activation. The problem is suspected to be with the transmission control unit. Possible causes include electronic failures or issues with the control module. Suggested solutions involve checking for fault codes, inspecting wiring for damage, and considering control module replacement or reprogramming. Ultimately, a specialist confirmed the control unit was defective, leading to a replacement that resolved the issues.

Those symptoms certainly point towards electronic issues with the transmission control. Slipping gears and grinding noises often accompany such failures. Have you checked for any fault codes using an OBDII scanner? Also, consider inspecting the wiring harness and connections to the transmission control module for any signs of damage or corrosion. It might be a simple fix, but likely points to the control module needing replacement or reprogramming.

Thanks a lot for your swift response! Much appreciated. I did indeed check the error memory, and there was a code indicating a problem with the transmission control module. I've also visually inspected the wiring, but nothing obvious jumped out. Regarding the control module replacement or reprogramming: is there a reliable way to determine whether it's a software glitch that could be fixed with reprogramming versus a hardware failure that necessitates a complete replacement? I am trying to avoid unnecessary transmission repair costs.

Given the error code and your detailed description, a defective control unit is the most probable cause. While reprogramming sometimes resolves software glitches, the slipping and grinding suggest a more serious internal failure within the control module itself. Replacement is unfortunately the more likely solution in your case. I would advise a visit to a specialized workshop to verify this assessment.

Just wanted to give a quick update. You were spot on! Took the Mini to a specialist, and they confirmed the transmission control unit was indeed defective. Sadly, it meant a hefty transmission repair bill – right around 1000€ as estimated. But after replacing the control module, everything is running smoothly again. Shifts are crisp, and the emergency mode is gone. Huge thanks for your help in diagnosing this! Your insights really helped me understand the situation before heading to the shop.
