Mini Cabrio Engine Problems

Alright, I'm officially pulling my hair out here. My 2014 Mini Cabrio is throwing a fit. Check engine light is on, engine power is way down, and the throttle response is garbage. Sometimes it even stalls at idle! Fuel consumption has gone through the roof, and there's a whistling noise, almost a loud hissing, when I accelerate. My gut feeling is a defect in the wastegate valve, but what do you think about the boost control? It's driving me nuts!

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Mini Cabrio was experiencing engine problems, including a check engine light, reduced power, poor throttle response, stalling, increased fuel consumption, and a whistling noise during acceleration. The initial suspicion was a defect in the wastegate valve affecting the boost control system. After consulting with others who had similar issues, it was suggested to check the MAP sensor as well. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be the wastegate valve, which was replaced, and the MAP sensor was cleaned, resolving the issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Whoa, sounds rough! I had similar symptoms on my Mini Cabrio – check engine light, power loss, the whole shebang. For me it was a faulty pressure sensor. Do you know what a MAP sensor is? It measures the manifold absolute pressure, basically how much air is going into the engine. A faulty one can mess with the boost control and cause all sorts of problems. Have you checked yours?

Pressure sensor, eh? Interesting. When you say 'checked' the MAP sensor, do you mean replaced it, or is there a way to test it first?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I didn't replace the MAP sensor myself, I took it to a mechanic. But yeah, they probably tested it first. If you're hearing whistling or hissing and the boost is messed up, it really does sound like a wastegate issue. If you're not comfortable tackling that yourself, I'd say it's worth getting a professional to take a look. Save yourself the headache!

Thanks for the insight! Dropped the Mini at the shop. Turns out it was indeed the wastegate valve causing all the ruckus with the boost control system. New valve installed, and the MAP sensor was cleaned while they were at it. Cost me 860€, but she's purring like a kitten again.
