Mini Cabrio Engine Trouble

Alright, so my 2012 Mini Cabrio with almost is acting up. The check engine light is on, and it's running rough. I'm also getting smoke when I accelerate, and it feels like it's jerking. Plus, I hear a loud hissing sound. I'm thinking it might be the EGR valve. Could that be the issue? I have heard that a defective EGR can cause problems with the catalytic converter over time, and I am getting worried about the next emissions test.

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Mini Cabrio was experiencing engine trouble, including a check engine light, rough running, smoke during acceleration, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. The suspected cause was a faulty EGR valve, which can lead to increased fuel consumption and potential catalytic converter issues. After replacing the EGR valve, the car's performance improved, resolving the check engine light, smoke, and jerking issues, and normalizing fuel consumption, thus preventing future emissions test problems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds like you might have a problem with your EGR valve. I had similar symptoms with my Mini Cabrio: rough running, check engine light, and even some hesitation when accelerating. Have you noticed any change in fuel consumption? If the EGR valve is stuck open, it's like constantly running with the choke on.

Thanks for the quick response. I did notice that the fuel consumption has increased recently. So, if it was the EGR valve on your car, did replacing it solve all the issues, including the check engine light and the increased fuel consumption? Also, did you have any problems with the emissions test?

Yes, replacing the EGR valve solved everything for me. The check engine light went off, the engine ran smoothly again, and the fuel consumption returned to normal. No issues with the emissions test after that. It's a fairly common problem, especially if you do a lot of short trips. It might be worth getting it checked out by a workshop to confirm.

Just wanted to give you an update. Took the Mini to a workshop as you suggested, and they confirmed it was the EGR valve. They replaced it, and the car is running much better now. No more smoke or jerking. Cost me 355€, but it's worth it to have the car back to normal. Thanks for your help!
