Mini Cabrio Gear Shift Indicator Problems

I'm at my wit's end with my 2010 Mini Cabrio. The gear shift indicator display is completely useless, and it's causing all sorts of problems. I can't engage the gears properly, the automatic transmission shifts erratically, and there are these awful grinding noises. The error memory shows a fault, suggesting a defective control unit. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it likely just a sensor problem, or am I looking at a major automotive electronics repair? I'm dreading the potential 1000€ repair bill!

Sounds like a frustrating issue! I had something similar happen with my Mini, though it's an older model. The electronic display was acting up, and the gear selector was all over the place. Have you checked the sensor connections? Sometimes it's just a loose wire causing havoc with the automotive electronics.

Thanks for the quick response! When you had that problem with your Mini, did the error memory also show a fault? And where exactly should I be looking for these sensor connections related to the gear selector and electronic display? Any tips on accessing them?

Yes, the error memory did show a fault. Honestly, given the symptoms you described, especially the grinding and shifting issues, it does sound like the control unit is the culprit. Trying to fiddle with the sensor connections might be a waste of time. I ended up taking mine to a workshop, and they confirmed it was the control unit. It's expensive, but messing with the gearbox or the shift knob yourself could make things worse.

Just wanted to give you an update. I took my Mini Cabrio to the workshop. Turns out you were right, the control unit was indeed faulty. They replaced it, and the gear shift indicator is working perfectly now. A hefty bill, as you predicted, but worth it to have the car back in working order. Thanks again for your help!
