Mini Cabrio HVAC Issue

My 2010 Mini Cabrio with the diesel engine is exhibiting a rather annoying issue. There's an error message popping up on the speedometer related to the HVAC system, and the air conditioning refuses to engage. Diagnostics point to a defective temperature sensor on the heat exchanger, possibly stemming from a faulty air conditioning control unit. Is this a common problem, or am I just lucky? The estimated repair cost is around 980€, which seems a bit steep.

Interesting. I had similar symptoms with my Mini Cabrio. The temperature gauge was acting up, and my HVAC system wouldn't kick on. Did you notice any coolant leak? I'm curious, what error codes are showing up in the system?

No visible coolant leak that I could see. I don’t have the exact error codes at hand, but the mechanic mentioned something about the temperature sensor for the heat exchanger giving implausible readings. Did yours also point to a sensor malfunction?

Yes, mine did point to a sensor. The repair shop initially suspected the control unit too, but it was just the sensor in the end. I'd recommend taking it in to be sure. Best to get it professionally sorted out.

Appreciate the input. Turns out the diagnosis was spot on. The temperature sensor on the heat exchanger was indeed defective. Ended up costing 980€ to replace, including labor. Air conditioning is now working, and the error is gone. Thanks again.
