Mini Cabrio NOx Storage Catalyst Aging

I am at wit's end with my 2020 Mini Cabrio. It has almost 100000 km on it and the check engine light decided to illuminate recently. Upon closer inspection via car diagnostics, I discovered an error related to the NOx storage catalyst aging. To add insult to injury, I suspect a slight exhaust leak as well. Could this exhaust leak be accelerating the catalyst aging, and therefore be the root cause of the nitrogen oxides issue? Anyone else experience something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Mini Cabrio owner is experiencing a check engine light related to NOx storage catalyst aging, suspecting an exhaust leak as a contributing factor. The conversation suggests that an exhaust leak could accelerate catalyst aging and affect nitrogen oxides levels. The recommended solution is to have the exhaust system inspected and repaired by a reputable workshop to address the leak and assess the NOx catalyst's condition. The owner later confirms that repairing the exhaust leak resolved the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my Mini Cabrio a while back. Check engine light, error codes. Was your fuel efficiency also affected? For me, it turned out to be a faulty oxygen sensor. What kind of error code are you getting? Have you checked the emissions system at all?

Interesting! A faulty oxygen sensor, you say? I haven't looked into that specifically. The error code I'm getting points towards the NOx storage catalyst aging. Could a faulty oxygen sensor trigger that indirectly? And how did you pinpoint the oxygen sensor as the culprit?

Ah, I see. With the NOx catalyst aging error, it's likely more complex than just an oxygen sensor. Although, a leak in the exhaust system can definitely mess with the readings and throw things off. My advice? Take it to a reputable workshop with experience in emissions systems. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact source of the leak and assess the health of your NOx catalyst. Best of luck!

Just wanted to provide an update. It was indeed a leak in the exhaust system, as suspected. Had it repaired for 265€. Hopefully, this will resolve the nitrogen oxides issue, and I'll keep an eye on the fuel efficiency as well. Thanks for the advice!
