Fan clutch? Fan motor? So many things that could be wrong! How can I tell which one it is? I'm not super techy, so ELI5 if you can!

Okay, so the fan clutch is basically a mechanical coupling that connects the fan to the engine. It's supposed to engage when the engine temperature rises. If it's faulty, the fan won't spin fast enough to cool the engine. The fan motor is simply what drives the fan blades. Honestly, if you're not comfortable poking around, I'd suggest getting it checked by someone who knows their stuff. Could save you a bigger headache and bill down the line.

Turns out it WAS a dodgy cable connection to the electric fan. 95€ later and my Mini Cabrio is purring again, no more overheating! Thanks for the heads-up about the fan clutch, good to know for future reference.

Sounds like the electric fan is the culprit alright. Had a similar issue with my Mini, although I didn't let it get to the point of overheating. First thing I'd check is the fan clutch, that's what engages the fan when the engine gets hot. Alternatively, could be the fan motor itself. Is the fan spinning freely when the engine is off?
