Summary of the thread
A 2014 Mini Cabrio diesel was experiencing engine overheating and an illuminated check engine light, suspected to be due to a defective radiator fan. Possible causes included a faulty speed sensor, thermal switch, or temperature control unit. After replacing the defective speed sensor, the overheating issue was resolved, and the cooling system functioned correctly, turning off the check engine light.

Thanks for the quick reply. Where exactly is the thermal switch located? And what kind of fan noise should I be listening for? I haven't noticed anything particularly unusual, but perhaps I wasn't paying close enough attention. Also, could a defective temperature control unit also be the culprit?

The thermal switch is usually located on the car radiator itself, near the bottom. As for the fan noise, listen for anything louder than normal, or a sort of grinding sound. A defective temperature control unit is a possibility, but it's less common than a faulty thermal switch or speed sensor. If you're not comfortable diagnosing it yourself, it might be best to take it to a workshop.

I replaced the defective speed sensor. That appears to have resolved the issue with the radiator fan in my Mini Cabrio. The cooling system is now functioning correctly, and the check engine light is off. The total cost, including the sensor and labor, came to 250€. Thanks for the advice; it pointed me in the right direction.

I had a similar problem with my Mini Cooper a while back. Overheating and the check engine light are classic symptoms. Did you check the thermal switch on the car radiator? Sometimes, a faulty switch can cause the fan to malfunction. Have you noticed any unusual fan noise before this happened? That might give you a clue.
