Mini Clubman diesel issue

I come to you with a vexing issue concerning my 2007 Mini Clubman diesel, which has clocked km. The preheating lamp refuses to extinguish, the check engine light illuminates with unwavering resolve, and the vehicle emits smoke upon acceleration. I suspect a defective glow control unit, potentially stemming from a faulty cable or plug connection. Might this assessment be accurate, or should I explore alternative avenues?

Wow, that sounds frustrating! I had something similar happen with my Mini Clubman, though it wasn't exactly the same. My check engine light kept popping on, and it felt like I was getting engine misfires sometimes. Have you checked the glow plugs themselves? Those are what the glow control unit manages, and if one's bad, it could mess things up. By the way, a glow plug is basically a little heater that helps the diesel engine start, especially when it's cold.

So, you're saying even if the problem is the control unit, it could be related to the glow plugs? I thought if the preheating lamp doesn't switch off, it directly indicates a fault in the control unit itself. How did you determine it was the plugs in your case?

Yes, it could still be the control unit even with the glow plugs being okay. In my case, the mechanic ran a diagnostic and pinpointed a faulty plug, but it's true that yours sounds more like the control unit itself. With those symptoms, especially the smoke, I'd advise getting it checked ASAP. Ignoring it could lead to vehicle stalling or further engine damage. Maybe take it to a workshop to check the control unit and cable connections?

You were right it turned out to be a defective cable connection in the glow control unit. After replacing the cable, the issue is now resolved. Fortunately, the repair cost was only 95€. The car runs perfectly now.
