Mini Clubman engine stalls at idle

Good day. I am experiencing a rather perplexing issue with my 2014 Mini Clubman, the diesel model, which currently has only 14022 km on the clock. The check engine light illuminated recently, and the engine now stalls at idle. Could this be related to a fuel tank ventilation system leak, perhaps a defective activated charcoal filter? I am trying to understand the root cause before taking it to a mechanic.

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Mini Clubman with low mileage is experiencing engine stalling at idle, accompanied by an illuminated check engine light. The issue is suspected to be related to a fuel tank ventilation system leak, possibly due to a defective activated charcoal filter. This problem may affect fuel efficiency and could involve the EVAP system, which includes components like the pressure sensor. A mechanic confirmed the diagnosis, identifying the defective charcoal filter as the cause, and resolved the issue, eliminating the stalling and check engine light.

Hello! A check engine light combined with stalling is definitely concerning. Since it's happening at idle, that adds another layer to it. Has your fuel efficiency been affected at all? It might be related to the EVAP system, which stands for Evaporative Emission Control System. It prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. I am not an expert, but sometimes a faulty pressure sensor can cause similar issues. It monitors the pressure within the fuel tank. Is the air flow from the ventilation system normal?

Thank you for your reply! I have noticed a slight decrease in fuel efficiency recently, but I thought it was just me. Can you elaborate on the pressure sensor and its role in the fuel tank ventilation system?

You're welcome! Since you've noticed a decrease in fuel efficiency, it does sound like the EVAP system is the culprit. The pressure sensor monitors the pressure in the fuel tank. If there's a leak in the fuel tank ventilation system, like from a defective charcoal filter, the pressure sensor might send incorrect readings to the engine control unit (ECU). This can lead to the engine running poorly, triggering the check engine light and causing it to stall. It might be best to have a qualified mechanic diagnose it properly and avoid further complications.

Thank you so much for your assistance. I took the Mini to a local mechanic, and they confirmed the fuel tank ventilation system leak. It turned out to be a defective activated charcoal filter, just as you suspected. The repair cost me 275€, but at least the check engine light is off, and the engine no longer stalls. I appreciate your help!
