Mini Clubman generator fault

I am writing to report an issue with my 2020 Mini Clubman diesel, which has covered some km. The vehicle is exhibiting symptoms indicative of a generator fault, namely reduced engine power, a warning light illuminated in the speedometer, poor starting performance, and weak, flickering lights. Furthermore, an error code pertaining to the generator is stored in the error memory. Am I correct in assuming a defective generator is the likely cause, necessitating an alternator replacement? I anticipate an eventual repair cost of approximately 960€.

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Clubman. Reduced engine power, warning lights, and a hard time starting. Did you check the charging system voltage? Is your serpentine belt in good condition? A failing alternator can definitely cause those symptoms. Have you considered testing the starter motor?

The charging system voltage appears low upon inspection. The serpentine belt seems fine, showing no obvious wear. But, when you experienced this, was the car completely unable to start at times, or was it just a struggle? And did the error memory also point specifically to the generator?

Yes, mine eventually wouldn't start at all some days. Other days, it would struggle. And the error codes pointed directly to the alternator. Honestly, I'd suggest getting it to a workshop to confirm. It does sound like the alternator to me though.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. It seems my suspicions were correct. The Mini Clubman is now back from the workshop. Indeed, the generator was defective. The alternator replacement, including labor, amounted to 960€. Hopefully, this resolves the issue permanently.
