Mini Clubman knock sensor issue

My 2013 Mini Clubman is showing a check engine light and exhibiting higher fuel consumption and uneven idling. Diagnostics point to a defective knock sensor. The likely cause is a defective cable or plug connection. Thoughts?

Hey, I had similar car problems with my Mini Clubman. Check engine light on, plus rough idling, and the car felt like it was drinking fuel. Sounds like a defective knock sensor alright. Have you checked the sensor's wiring? The cable or plug connection might be the issue. The knock sensor detects engine knock which is pre-ignition in the cylinders. If it's faulty, it can mess with timing and fuel mixture.

Wiring checked, looks fine at first glance. Where exactly was the problem on your car? Any specific area to focus on?

On mine, it was corrosion inside the plug itself. Visually, the wires looked okay, but the connection was bad. I cleaned it up, but it didn't last. Ended up replacing the plug and a short section of wire. Honestly, given the symptoms and the potential impact on fuel efficiency, I'd suggest getting it sorted at a workshop.

Thanks for the insight. The defective knock sensor diagnosis was spot on. It was indeed the cable and plug connection. Total auto repair cost: 95€. Back to normal fuel efficiency now.
