Mini Clubman Stalling at Idle

Alright, so my 2010 Mini Clubman diesel has developed a rather annoying habit. The engine light is illuminated, and it stalls at idle, which, as you can imagine, is rather inconvenient. I suspect it might be related to the tank ventilation valve, perhaps some clogged hoses. Anyone experience something similar and have any insights?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Mini Clubman diesel is experiencing stalling at idle with the engine light on, suspected to be related to the tank ventilation valve or clogged hoses. The issue might involve the EVAP system, particularly the purge valve, which can cause pressure problems if blocked. A workshop visit confirmed the problem was indeed the tank ventilation valve and clogged hoses, resolving the stalling and engine light issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar problem with my Mini Clubman a while back. The engine light kept coming on, and it would stall sometimes when I was idling. Have you checked the purge valve? It might be related to the EVAP system. It's like the car's way of breathing, and if it's blocked, you get all sorts of weird pressure issues. Does it happen more when your fuel tank is full?

Yep, sounds like the exact same thing I had. The purge valve is part of the EVAP system, and if it's stuck open or closed, it can mess with the fuel tank pressure. The pressure sensor could also be involved, but in my case, it was the valve itself and some gunked-up hoses. Honestly, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They have the tools to properly diagnose the EVAP system and clear any clogs. Will save you a lot of headache.

Interesting, I haven't checked the purge valve specifically. Where is it located, and how would I know if it's faulty? And yes, now that you mention it, it does seem worse right after I fill up the fuel tank. Could a faulty pressure sensor also be the culprit, or is that less likely?

Just a quick update. I took your advice and went to the workshop. Turns out it was the tank ventilation valve, just like you said. They found some clogged hoses causing the whole issue. Cost me 175€, but at least the engine light is off and the car isn't stalling anymore. Thanks a bunch for your help!
