Mini Clubman Transmission Problems

My 2008 Mini Clubman is having transmission issues. It's a gasoline model with low mileage. The gear shift indicator on the instrument panel is not working. I can't properly engage the gears, the gearbox shifts poorly, makes grinding noises, and there's an error stored. All signs point to a defective control unit. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my Clubman. The gear selector was faulty and the instrument panel wasn't displaying the correct gear. When you say error stored, do you know what code it was?

I think the error code mentioned something about the transmission control unit. Is that what you meant by gear selector?

Yes, the transmission control unit is part of the gear selector mechanism. If the error code points to it, it's likely the cause. Best take it to a workshop for diagnosis.

Thanks. It was, as you suspected, the transmission control unit. Replaced it and now the gear selection display on the car dashboard works again. Cost me around 1000€.
