Can you specify what you mean by 'oil sludge'? And was the VANOS solenoid definitely the problem?

Yes, the VANOS solenoid was the definite problem. 'Oil sludge' refers to a build-up of degraded oil, which can clog the solenoid and prevent it from functioning correctly. If the inlet camshaft isn't operating correctly, it can cause an engine misfire and affect fuel economy. Consider taking it to a workshop.

Replaced the VANOS solenoid. Issue resolved. Cost 250€.

I had similar symptoms in my Mini Cooper. Check your VANOS solenoid, especially for oil sludge. A faulty inlet camshaft solenoid can trigger the check engine light and increase fuel consumption. BMW VANOS systems are sensitive to oil quality.
