Mini Cooper cold start issues and PTC heater fault

My 2009 Mini Cooper diesel is exhibiting some concerning symptoms. During cold starts, the engine runs poorly, and the fuel consumption has noticeably increased. Furthermore, I've found an error stored in the error memory, which points towards a potential issue with the PTC heater. Could a defective electric auxiliary heater be the root cause of these problems? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Mini Cooper diesel is experiencing poor engine performance during cold starts and increased fuel consumption, with an error code indicating a potential PTC heater fault. The symptoms suggest that a defective electric auxiliary heater could be the root cause. A similar issue was resolved by replacing the PTC heater, which improved engine performance and heating. A workshop confirmed the PTC heater fault, and a repair is planned to address the problem.

I had a similar issue with my Mini Cooper a while back, though mine is not a diesel. The symptoms sound very familiar, especially the rough running on cold starts and the error stored in the memory. Does your heat not work at all, or is it just weak? Have you checked the fuses related to the heating system? It might be a simple electrical fault.

My heating system seems to be blowing lukewarm air at best. Where exactly did you find the electrical fault in your car? Was it also related to the PTC heater, and what was your final solution?

Yes, in my case, the issue was indeed the PTC heater. The diagnostic pointed directly to it, and the symptoms were almost identical to what you're describing – heat not working properly and the error code related to the heater. Considering the age of the car and the mileage, it's quite likely that the heater has simply failed. I would recommend taking it to a qualified mechanic for a proper diagnosis and heater repair. Replacing the PTC heater resolved the issue entirely for me. Are you comfortable troubleshooting electrical faults yourself, or would you prefer a workshop to handle it?

Thank you for the insights. Based on your experience and the error codes, I've decided to take it to a workshop. They confirmed the PTC heater is indeed faulty, and the electrical fault is causing the poor running and increased fuel consumption. The heater repair will be around 350€. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue and get my Mini back to its optimal performance.
