Mini Cooper Diesel Engine Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Mini Cooper Diesel with 99,000 km is experiencing reduced engine power, rough running, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and a loud hissing sound, with the engine light on. The suspected cause is a defective intake manifold flap control, which can lead to air intake issues and vacuum leaks. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired at a workshop, which confirmed the issue and resolved it by replacing the defective switch, restoring smooth engine performance.

I visually inspected the air intake hose, and I couldn't find any obvious cracks. How can I definitively test the air intake system without specialized equipment?

Given the symptoms and mileage, a defective intake manifold control switch is a likely culprit. The hissing sound suggests a vacuum leak related to the air intake system, which this switch controls. I would recommend taking it to a workshop for diagnosis and repair.

Thank you for your insight. I took the car to a reliable workshop, and it turned out to be exactly what you suspected: the switch for the intake manifold control was defective. The repair, including parts and labor, came to 465€. Now the engine runs smoothly again, and the engine light is off.

Reduced power and hissing sounds often point to air intake issues. Have you checked the air intake hose for any cracks or leaks? Also, when did you last replace your air filter?
