Mini Cooper Diesel Engine Stalling Issue

I am experiencing an issue with my 2019 Mini Cooper diesel. The check engine light illuminates, and the engine stalls intermittently at idle. Diagnostic error codes indicate a fuel level sensor fault. I suspect a defective fuse. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Mini Cooper diesel experienced intermittent engine stalling at idle, accompanied by an illuminated check engine light. Diagnostic error codes pointed to a fuel level sensor fault, leading to suspicion of a defective fuse. After replacing the faulty fuse, the stalling issue was resolved, and the error was cleared, restoring normal operation of the fuel gauge.

The engine stalling and check engine light, along with the error code, definitely point to a fuel delivery issue. I had a similar experience with my older Volvo – though it was a petrol engine. A faulty sensor can cause all sorts of problems. Have you checked the wiring harness and connector to the fuel sensor? Sometimes a loose connection can mimic a faulty sensor. The fuel sensor is located inside the fuel tank and detects the fuel level. Another thing to consider is whether the sensor is sending the correct voltage to the ECU (Engine Control Unit).

Thank you for the reply. I note your comment about checking the wiring. Where is the fuel sensor located, and how would I go about testing the voltage?

The fuel sensor is located inside the fuel tank, usually attached to the fuel pump assembly. Accessing it usually requires dropping the fuel tank or accessing it through an access panel, if your Mini has one. Testing the voltage requires a multimeter. However, given that you suspect a defective fuse and are experiencing stalling, I would recommend having it checked by a qualified mechanic. You might cause further damage.

I appreciate the insights. It turned out to be a defective fuse related to the fuel level sensor. Replacing it, at a cost of 52€, has resolved the stalling and cleared the error. The fuel gauge on the car dashboard is now operating as expected.
