Mini Cooper Diesel Jerking and Error Codes

Alright, I'm officially stumped. My 2018 Mini Cooper Diesel is acting up. I'm experiencing jerking when accelerating, the check engine light is on, and I've noticed reduced engine power. Also, it sometimes stalls at idle, runs rough, and there's a strong exhaust smell. I pulled the error codes, and it points towards the intake manifold. I suspect the intake manifold is leaking due to scorching. Anyone else experience similar issues? Could a faulty manifold sensor be the culprit here? I'm trying to avoid a costly repair if possible.

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Mini Cooper Diesel was experiencing jerking during acceleration, a check engine light, reduced engine power, stalling at idle, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell. Error codes indicated a potential issue with the intake manifold, possibly due to scorching and leakage. Suggestions included checking the manifold pressure sensor for faulty readings, but ultimately, the intake manifold was identified as the problem and replaced, resolving the issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had similar symptoms with my Mini (same model). Jerking, check engine light, and rough running. Have you checked the manifold pressure sensor? Could be a faulty reading causing the engine misfire.

Interesting, thanks for the input. Where is the manifold pressure sensor located, and is it something I can check myself without special tools?

Yeah, the manifold pressure sensor is usually attached to the intake manifold itself. You might be able to visually inspect it for any obvious damage, but testing it properly requires a multimeter. Honestly, given the symptoms and error codes, it sounds like the intake manifold itself is the problem, especially if you suspect a leak. It's a common issue. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed before throwing parts at it. You don't want to mess with the air intake system without proper knowledge.

Just got my Mini Cooper back from the shop. Turns out it was indeed the intake manifold. They replaced it, and the car is running smoothly again. Total cost was 1180€. Thanks for the tip, it really helped me narrow down the issue and be prepared when talking to the mechanic!
