Mini Cooper diesel power loss and smoke

I'm experiencing some issues with my 2013 Mini Cooper diesel. I've noticed a significant reduction in engine power, especially when accelerating, and there's also some smoke coming from the exhaust. My initial thought is a defective diesel particulate filter. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Is there anything I can check before I start looking at replacing the entire exhaust system?

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Mini Cooper diesel is experiencing significant power loss and exhaust smoke, suspected to be caused by a defective diesel particulate filter (DPF). The issue may be due to a blocked diesel filter, which can be temporarily alleviated by DPF cleaning, though this might not be a permanent fix. A proper vehicle inspection is recommended to confirm the diagnosis, and in this case, replacing the diesel filter resolved the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds like a blocked diesel filter. I had similar issues with my Cooper D, loss of power and some smoke. Have you checked the backpressure? Sometimes a good DPF cleaning can help, though it depends on the extent of the blockage.

I haven't checked the backpressure myself, but I suspect it's high. When you say DPF cleaning, are you referring to the chemical cleaning treatments you add to the fuel, or something more involved? Also, did the cleaning solve the problem permanently for you, or did you eventually need to replace the filter?

The cleaning helped temporarily, but the issue returned after a few months. Eventually, I needed a new diesel filter. Considering the smoke and power loss, yours sounds pretty bad. I'd suggest a proper vehicle inspection at a workshop to confirm the diagnosis before throwing money at it.

Thanks for the input. I took it to a mechanic, and as suspected, the diesel filter was indeed defective. Replacement cost me about 1550€. Ouch. Hopefully, this sorts it out for good.
