Mini Cooper Engine Issues

I am experiencing some dreadful issues with my 2016 Mini Cooper, gasoline engine, with 141020 kilometers on the odometer. The check engine light is illuminated, and the engine power has been significantly reduced. It feels like there is immense turbo lag. The engine response is poor, and it occasionally stalls at idle. Furthermore, my fuel consumption has increased noticeably. I am also hearing a distinct whistling noise, along with a loud hissing sound when I accelerate. From what I have read, a defect in the wastegate valve could be the cause. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Mini Cooper with 141,020 kilometers was experiencing engine issues, including a check engine light, reduced power, stalling, increased fuel consumption, and a whistling noise. The suspected cause was a defect in the wastegate valve, affecting boost pressure. After taking the car to a workshop, the wastegate valve was confirmed as the issue and repaired, resolving the problems.

The check engine light, reduced power, stalling, and whistling all point to a boost leak. Have you inspected the intercooler hoses? A crack there would explain the symptoms.

Thank you for your message. How can I check the intercooler hoses for leaks? Do I need special tools, or is there a specific area I should inspect more closely? Could a faulty throttle body also cause those symptoms?

The whistling and hissing under acceleration, combined with the other symptoms, strongly suggest a wastegate valve issue impacting boost pressure. While a throttle body issue is possible, the combination of symptoms aligns more directly with a wastegate malfunction. I advise you to have the vehicle diagnosed by a qualified workshop.

Thank you so much for the advice. I took my Mini Cooper to a workshop, and they confirmed your suspicion. The wastegate valve was indeed defective. The boost pressure system has been repaired, and it cost me 860€. Now, the check engine light is off, the engine runs smoothly, and the whistling noise is gone.
