Mini Cooper Engine Power Reduced Generator Fault

I'm having some trouble with my 2018 Mini Cooper. The engine power is reduced, and there's a warning light on the speedometer. It's starting poorly, and the lights are flickering. I scanned for codes, and it's showing a generator fault. Could this really be a defective generator?

Sounds like you might have an alternator issue, which is often called a generator. Has the serpentine belt ever been changed? A worn belt can cause the alternator to not spin correctly, leading to a voltage drop. Also, have you had the battery load tested? A battery low on voltage can cause similar symptoms, sometimes people misdiagnose it as a bad starter motor.

Serpentine belt is fairly new, and the battery seems okay, though I haven't specifically load tested it. What does voltage drop mean exactly? And how can that affect engine power?

A voltage drop is when the electrical system isn't getting the correct amount of voltage. The alternator, or generator, is responsible for charging the battery and providing power to the electrical components while the engine is running. If it's failing, you'll see those symptoms. Reduced engine power is likely the car's computer limiting performance to protect itself. Weak lights and poor starting are classic signs. If the error memory also shows the same, I'd lean towards a defective generator. I'd recommend getting it checked out at a workshop soon.

Just wanted to update. Took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. The generator was indeed faulty. They replaced it, and all the issues are gone. Cost me about 960€. Thanks a lot for the help!
