Mini Cooper engine stalling at idle

Hey, I'm having a bit of a headache with my diesel 2012 Mini Cooper. It's got about 146050 km on the clock. Lately, the check engine light keeps coming on, and the engine stalls at idle sometimes. Could this be related to a tank ventilation valve malfunction? I've read a bit about the EVAP system, and I'm wondering if that's where the problem lies.

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Mini Cooper with approximately 146,050 km is experiencing engine stalling at idle and a persistent check engine light. The issue is suspected to be related to the EVAP system, specifically a malfunctioning tank ventilation valve. A similar problem was resolved by addressing clogged hoses in the ventilation system, which is a common issue with these vehicles. It is recommended to have the vehicle professionally inspected and repaired to avoid further complications.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds like you might be having issues with your EVAP system. I had a similar problem with my Mini Cooper a while back – the engine light kept popping on, and it would stall sometimes, especially when the fuel tank was less than half full. Have you checked the fuel tank ventilation valve and its hoses? That was the culprit in my case. If the hoses are cracked or blocked, it can cause all sorts of weirdness.

Thanks for the quick reply! That's really helpful. When you say you checked the ventilation valve, did you do it yourself, or did you take it to a workshop? And how did you figure out it was the hoses specifically that were blocked?

I wasn't able to fix it myself, and I ended up taking it to a workshop. The engine light and the stalling were driving me crazy. They diagnosed it pretty quickly – said the hoses for the tank ventilation were all gunked up. The mechanic mentioned it's a fairly common issue with these cars. If you're not comfortable poking around yourself, I'd suggest getting it checked out professionally. It could save you a lot of time and hassle.

Just wanted to update you that it was indeed the tank ventilation valve. The hoses were all clogged up as you suspected. The automotive repair ended up costing around 175€. Thanks a bunch for the help!
