Mini Cooper Exhaust Sensor Issue

My 2014 Mini Cooper diesel is showing a check engine light and reduced engine power. Fuel consumption has also gone up. I suspect it's a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. Anyone seen this before? Is there a common cause I should be aware of?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my old Peugeot – check engine light, power loss, the works. Turned out to be a faulty exhaust sensor too. Have you checked for any obvious signs of leaks in the exhaust system? Might be worth a look before you start replacing parts. Could be an exhaust component that is causing the issue.

What kind of exhaust sensor was it on your Peugeot? And how did you eventually diagnose the leak? I'm not sure where to even start looking for a leak in the exhaust system on the Mini Cooper.

From what I remember, it was the exhaust sensor right after the catalytic converter on the Peugeot. I didn't find the leak myself, to be honest. I took it to a workshop, and they used a smoke test to find a tiny crack in the exhaust manifold. I'd probably advise getting it checked out professionally. Exhaust system issues can mess with the engine management in all sorts of ways.

Just to close this out, it was indeed the exhaust temperature sensor, likely caused by a small leak somewhere in the exhaust system. Engine management light is now off. Cost me 265€ to get it sorted.
