Mini Cooper Fuel Flap Problems

So my 2009 Mini Cooper is being a right royal pain. The fuel flap release isn't working I'm getting an error stored in the error memory, and I can't open the blessed fuel door. Locking and unlocking is completely impossible. I'm guessing it might be the release mechanism or electric actuator, but I'm not entirely sure. The key fob does nothing. Any ideas before I lose my mind and run out of petrol I reckon it's probably a defective linkage, but wanted your opinions. Help

Sounds like a pain First thing, have you checked the fuse for the fuel door release It's usually in the fuse box in the passenger footwell or under the bonnet. Also, does the central locking work okay on the other doors Just trying to rule out a bigger electrical issue. By the way, when you say error memory, did you use an OBD reader to find the code

Cheers for the quick reply I did check the fuses, all seem fine. Central locking is working perfectly on all other doors. And yeah, I used an OBD reader, it threw up a generic code about 'fuel filler door release circuit malfunction'. Any idea where I'd find the electric actuator for the fuel door Is it easy to get to

Okay, that code pretty much confirms it's the electric actuator. It's basically a little motor that physically pushes the fuel door open. On your Mini, it's located right behind the fuel filler, so you have to get access from inside the wheel arch. Honestly, it can be fiddly to get to and even more fiddly to replace without breaking something. Given the error code and your symptoms, I'd say it's time to bite the bullet and get it to a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and replace the actuator. They'll probably call it the lock actuator. It's not a huge job, but best left to the pros if you're not confident

Huge thanks I took your advice and booked it in. Turns out it was the lock actuator itself, just like you thought. New one fitted and all working perfectly now. Cost me 210€, but at least I can fill her up again without a crowbar
