Mini Cooper gear shift indicator fault

I am experiencing a gear shift indicator display fault with my 2014 Mini Cooper. It is not possible to engage the gears. I am also observing implausible shifting behavior of the automatic transmission, with the gearbox slipping and shifting uncleanly. Additionally, there are grinding noises when shifting gears. There is also an error stored in the error memory, and the gear selection display in the speedometer is non-functional. Suspect is a defective control unit. I have been quoted approximately 1000€ for the repair.

Whoa, sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my Mini – not sure what year yours is, but mine's a Cooper S. The digital display went haywire, and the gear indicator was totally useless. The whole car dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree! Did you notice any other weird electronic display issues at the same time? Also, have you checked the basic stuff like the battery voltage? A weak battery can sometimes cause all sorts of automotive electronics to glitch out. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the info. I did not notice other electronic display issues. I also did not check the battery voltage. Was the eventual repair for your Mini also the control unit?

Yep, that sounds super familiar. In my case, the car ended up at the shop, and they diagnosed a faulty control unit. It's a common issue, apparently. Given all the symptoms you're describing, especially the error codes and the flaky gear indicator, I'd say it's highly likely you're dealing with the same problem. Best to get it checked out by a professional, though. These electronic gremlins can be tricky!

Understood. I appreciate your assistance. The Mini Cooper is now at the workshop. They have confirmed the control unit as the culprit. Repair cost is as expected.
