Mini Cooper rough running and stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Mini Cooper was experiencing rough running, stalling at idle, and jerking during acceleration, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause was a defective ignition coil, possibly due to a faulty cable or plug connection, leading to a misfire. After inspection and repair at a workshop, the issue was confirmed to be a defective ignition coil and a problematic cable connection, which were resolved, restoring the car's performance.

Given the symptoms and your initial inspection, the defective cable connection is indeed a probable cause. However, without proper vehicle diagnostics, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact issue. I would recommend taking it to a workshop for a thorough check.

Yeah, I had a quick look at the coil pack. Didn't see anything obvious. What exactly should I be looking for when checking the connections? Any specific signs of a defective cable connection?

Thanks a bunch for your help! Turns out it WAS a defective ignition coil, just like you suspected. The cable connection was a bit dodgy too. Got it sorted for 95€ at the workshop. Runs like a dream now! I will keep an eye on the ignition system from now on.

Rough running and stalling, especially with the check engine light, does sound like a misfire. The ignition system on those Minis can be temperamental. Have you checked the coil pack for any visible damage or loose connections?
