Mini Cooper S Convertible engine control light comes on
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The issue revolves around a 2012 Mini Cooper S Convertible that is emitting black smoke, running unevenly, jerking when accelerating, and consuming excessive fuel. The engine control light is also on. The owner suspects a faulty lambda probe heater. One suggestion is that the engine control unit could be defective, as similar symptoms were resolved by replacing this unit in another vehicle. Another suggestion is to check the lambda sensor, as a faulty one could cause the described symptoms. The owner is advised to have both the engine control unit and the lambda sensor checked at a garage.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I just recently had my mini serviced after 112345 km mileage. The engine control unit repair sounds quite expensive, but if that solves the problem, it's worth it. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely have it checked at the garage!

Thanks a lot, buddy! That's a really impressive mileage, your Mini has seen a lot. Of course, with that many kilometers, some parts can wear out. The engine control unit was just my personal experience. It could also be the lambda sensor, as you originally suspected. However, I have no personal experience with the lambda sensor heater. However, you can always find reports on the internet from people who have experienced similar symptoms and the lambda sensor was the problem. A defective lambda sensor can definitely lead to increased fuel consumption and rough engine running. So, get it checked out at the garage and keep us here in the forum up to date on what the guys there say. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it won't be too expensive!

Thank you very much for the information! I have to say, it's really helpful. Yes, my Mini has already been through a lot. I'll put your advice into practice and have the lambda sensor and the engine control unit checked at the garage. Fortunately, I have an appointment next week. I also hope that it won't be too expensive. I will definitely let you know the results. Until then, many thanks again!

Engine light came on, diagnosed as an after catalytic converter lambda sensor (confirmed by garage). Had the sensor changed and the engine light has come back on. Immediately after the change the rpm would rise at idle to 1500rpm, but would go back down to normal if the A/C is switched on. Scanned again with the Carly scanner and the same problem is present with the lambda sensor.

Hey buddy, I had a similar problem with my 2010 Mini Cooper S. I'm by no means a car expert, but I do have some experience with it. In my case, the engine control unit was faulty. The symptoms were similar to yours. I took it to the garage and the guys there recognized the problem and replaced the control unit. It cost me about 1000 euros, but since then my Mini has been running like clockwork again. But I'm not sure if it's the same problem for you. Could you give more details about your vehicle, such as mileage, whether it has been serviced recently etc.? Then I can try to help you further.
