Mini Cooper transmission issues

Okay, I'm officially stumped and pretty frustrated! My 2016 Mini Cooper is giving me fits. The engine warning light keeps popping up, and I'm getting error codes related to the transmission oil temperature sensor. The gearbox has gone into emergency mode a few times, and the gear shifting has become really unclean, almost like the automatic transmission is slipping. Sometimes, there are even grinding noises when shifting gears. Could this all be related to the transmission oil sensor? I suspect it might also be related to the oil level being too low, but I'm not sure. Help!

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Mini Cooper is experiencing transmission issues, including an engine warning light, error codes related to the transmission oil temperature sensor, emergency mode activation, unclean gear shifting, and grinding noises. These problems are suspected to be linked to a faulty transmission oil sensor, potentially caused by low transmission oil levels. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by a professional mechanic to address the sensor issue and ensure proper oil levels, preventing further damage.

Hey there, I had a similar issue with my Mini Cooper. The symptoms sound very familiar, especially the weird gear shifting and the MIL illuminating. Have you checked your transmission oil level? A faulty oil sensor often throws a code when the level is low. You mentioned the gearbox being in emergency mode - did you also experience any grinding when shifting?

Yes, there was grinding when shifting, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. You mention that you had a similar issue. Was it also related to the transmission oil sensor, and if so, what did you do to fix it? Was it a big transmission repair?

Yep, sounds like the oil sensor is the culprit, triggered by low transmission oil. The grinding noise confirms it. I'm not a mechanic, so I just took it to a workshop, and they sorted it out. The error codes, emergency mode, and unclean gear shifting all point to the same thing. I'd recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic for a proper diagnosis and transmission repair before things get worse.

Just wanted to give you a heads up that you were spot on! Took my Mini Cooper to the shop and they confirmed it was indeed the transmission oil temperature sensor acting up, probably caused by low transmission oil level. They're quoting me 365€ for the transmission repair. Thanks again for your help!
