Mini Countryman Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value Error

My 2023 Mini Countryman diesel is showing a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' error. The engine light is on, and I'm experiencing reduced engine power, poor engine response, and higher fuel consumption. I suspect it might be a defective crankshaft sensor. Anyone else encounter this issue?

I had similar symptoms with my Mini, though I can't recall the exact mileage at the time. The engine light, reduced power, and poor response are definitely concerning. I would start by checking the crankshaft sensor, as you suggested. Also, consider inspecting the cam sensor and the timing chain. A misfire could trigger similar issues. What reference value are you getting?

Thanks for the quick response. When you had the issue, did the diagnostic tool specifically point to the crankshaft sensor, or was it more ambiguous? Also, what exactly should I be looking for when inspecting the cam sensor? Is there a specific test for the reference value?

The diagnostic tool was quite specific about the crankshaft sensor, but I also had the cam sensor checked as a precaution. Regarding the cam sensor inspection, I'm not an expert, but the workshop mentioned something about checking the signal output with an oscilloscope. Given the symptoms and the error code, I would recommend taking it to a workshop. It's better to have it professionally diagnosed to avoid further damage.

Just wanted to update this thread. Took the Mini Countryman to the workshop, and as suspected, the crankshaft sensor was indeed defective. Replacement and diagnostics cost 340€. Engine light is gone, and the engine is running smoothly again. Thanks for the advice; it pointed me in the right direction.
