Mini Countryman Diesel Engine Problems

I'm experiencing some pretty concerning issues with my 2013 Mini Countryman diesel. The engine is jerking when accelerating, the check engine light is on, and I've noticed reduced engine power. It also stalls at idle sometimes and runs quite rough, plus there's a strong exhaust smell. I scanned the error memory and it indicates a defective intake manifold, likely leaking due to scorching. Does this sound like a plausible diagnosis? I'm trying to avoid an expensive and unnecessary repair, but I'm afraid this might be a costly fix around 1180€.

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Mini Countryman diesel is experiencing engine jerking, reduced power, stalling, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell, with the check engine light on. The error memory suggests a defective intake manifold, likely due to scorching, causing a vacuum leak. A suggestion to check for a vacuum leak around the manifold sensor was made, and a professional smoke test was recommended. The issue was confirmed to be a defective intake manifold, which was repaired, resolving the problems.

Wow, that sounds eerily familiar! I had a similar issue with my Mini a while back – I think it's a common problem. I experienced engine misfire and the check engine light also illuminated. Have you checked for a vacuum leak around the manifold sensor? A gasket leak can cause those symptoms. It's worth investigating before you go spending a fortune.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say 'vacuum leak around the manifold sensor', could you be a bit more specific? I'm not super familiar with car mechanics. Is there a way to check that myself, or is it something I should leave to a professional?

Yes, a vacuum leak means unmetered air is entering the engine, messing up the fuel-air mixture. That can definitely cause engine misfire. It sounds like you've done some good preliminary diagnostics. Given the error codes and symptoms, and especially if you suspect scorching, it's probably best to get it checked by a workshop. They can perform a smoke test to pinpoint the exact location of the leak and confirm if it's the intake manifold.

Just wanted to update this thread. Took my Countryman to the workshop, and you were spot on. Turns out the intake manifold was indeed defective, showing signs of scorching and causing a vacuum leak. The total bill came to 1180€, but at least it's running smoothly now. Thanks again for your help!
