Mini Countryman diesel issue

I'm a bit concerned about my 2011 Mini Countryman diesel. The preheating lamp refuses to switch off, and the check engine light is now on. Plus, there's some smoke when I accelerate. My research suggests it could be a defective glow control unit, maybe just a bad cable or plug connection. Anyone else experienced this? What should I do?

Hey, I had something similar happen with my Countryman. The preheating lamp stayed on, and the engine light popped up too. Did you notice any rough idling or engine misfire, especially during a cold start? For me, it felt like the engine was struggling, like it was gasping for air. Could be a faulty glow plug, but definitely run a diagnostic test.

Engine misfire that's interesting. I have noticed rough idling, especially when the engine is cold. Is the glow plug issue difficult to fix by yourself? Any idea how much it cost you to fix?

Yeah, rough idling and smoke sounds familiar. It could be the glow plugs themselves, but if your research points to the control unit, that's a good starting point. Honestly, unless you're really comfortable with car maintenance, this might be one for the workshop. I took mine in; they ran a diagnostic test to confirm the issue and replaced the control unit. Saved me a lot of headache and potential for messing things up even more.

Just wanted to let you know that the diagnostic test confirmed it was the glow control unit. They replaced it, and the preheating light is now behaving. The check engine light is gone, and no more smoke! The final bill was 95€ a small price to pay for peace of mind. Thanks again for your help!
