Mini Countryman Diesel Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Mini Countryman diesel exhibited issues such as a check engine light, increased fuel consumption, stalling at idle, and black smoke during acceleration. These symptoms suggested a potential MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor failure, affecting the air-fuel ratio. The problem was resolved by replacing the MAF sensor, which restored normal vehicle performance and eliminated the issues.

Air leaks, huh? Where exactly should I be looking? I'm not super familiar with the intake system layout on this Countryman.

Yeah, check all the hoses and connections between the air filter box and the throttle body. But honestly, with those symptoms and the check engine light, it's most likely the MAF sensor itself. A diagnostic scan should confirm it. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, a workshop can easily test or replace the MAF sensor. They'll probably hook it up to a diagnostic tool to read the fault codes first.

Yep, that's exactly what it was. New MAF sensor fitted and she's running like a dream again. Fuel consumption is back to normal, no more stalling, check engine light is gone, and the smoke is history. Cost me 365€ all in. Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like a classic MAF sensor failure. I had similar symptoms on my old Skoda – higher fuel consumption, performance decline, and eventually the check engine light came on. The ECU probably isn't getting the correct air-fuel ratio info. Have you checked for any obvious air leaks in the intake system?
