Mini Countryman diesel problems with exhaust gas recirculation or EGR valve

Hey everyone, my 2013 Mini Countryman Diesel, 176543 km, is causing problems: Check Engine Light on, engine stalls on its own, loss of power, runs rough, strong exhaust smell and jerks at idle. I suspect it's the EGR valve. Have you had similar symptoms? What experiences have you had with your mechanics? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Mini Countryman Diesel is experiencing issues such as the Check Engine Light being on, engine stalling, loss of power, rough running, strong exhaust smell, and jerking at idle. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve, which is known to cause such issues in diesel engines. A similar case involved a defective or stuck EGR valve that was resolved by cleaning and replacing the valve, leading to improved vehicle performance. Immediate attention from a mechanic is advised to prevent further engine damage.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2016 Mini Cooper Diesel. The symptoms were exactly the same for me: Check Engine Light on, engine stopped by itself, loss of power and severe jerking at idle. My mechanic quickly determined that the EGR valve was defective or stuck. It was a serious problem that should not be put on the back burner, as it could lead to further damage to the engine. The EGR valve was cleaned and finally replaced. Since then, the car has been running perfectly again. This is actually a common problem with diesel engines of this age. It's best to see a mechanic immediately! Greetings

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! That sounds pretty much like what my Countryman is going through right now. Do you remember how much you ended up paying for the repair? Has anything similar happened again since then? Regards

Hey, yes, I still remember it well. The repair cost me a total of €355. This included the diagnosis and replacement of the defective or stuck EGR valve. Since then, my Mini has been running smoothly again. No more breakdowns or similar symptoms. So I can only recommend that you make an appointment with your mechanic as soon as possible. Better fix it now before it gets even more expensive! Good luck and hopefully a good drive again soon! Best regards

Hey, your information is really helpful, thanks! Then I'll probably take my Mini to the garage as soon as possible. The €355 still sounds halfway okay if it's really quiet afterwards. Hopefully everything will run smoothly again afterwards. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again and best regards!
