Mini Countryman diesel problems with the regeneration of the diesel particulate filter

Loss of engine power

DPF regeneration failure

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Hello everyone, my 2017 Mini Countryman Diesel is causing problems: black smoke when accelerating, engine indicator light on, loss of power, DPF regeneration doesn't seem to be working and the exhaust smells strongly. I suspect that the diesel particulate filter is heavily loaded. Has anyone had similar experiences? How did you solve the problem and what did the garage do? Thanks for your tips!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2016 Mini Cooper S Diesel. I only have some experience with cars, but I can tell you about my visit to the garage. My diesel particulate filter was defective due to high mileage, and I had similar symptoms to yours: black smoke, check engine light on, loss of power and problems with DPF regeneration. The garage replaced the DPF and it cost me around 1550 euros. To be able to help you better, more information about your vehicle would be helpful: mileage and when the problem started. I hope this helps you! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for your reply! My Countryman currently has 96,543 km on the clock. The problems started about two weeks ago and have been getting worse ever since. I went to the garage today, but they said they need to do a more detailed check. Let's see what they come up with. Did your garage also mention other options or did they change the DPF straight away? Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the info! My mileage was pretty similar back then - my Mini Cooper S Diesel had just over 100,000 km on the clock when the problems became really noticeable. When I went to the garage, they checked everything thoroughly first, but in the end, changing the DPF was the only real solution. Before the change, they tried to get the problem under control with a few software updates and forced regeneration, but unfortunately that didn't help in the long term. Of course, it could also be that other components, such as a dirty air filter or defective injectors, are causing problems. However, in my case, the fully loaded DPF was definitely the main cause. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your garage finds a quicker and perhaps cheaper solution! Let us know what comes out of your check. Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the detailed answer! That all sounds pretty similar to me. I really hope that it's "just" the DPF in my case and that there's nothing more to it. I'll definitely ask my garage about the options you mentioned before they change the DPF straight away. Perhaps forced regeneration or a software update is still a possibility. I'll keep you posted on what comes out of the check. Hopefully the whole thing will be resolved soon and not too expensive! Best regards,
