Mini Countryman Hybrid Rain Light Sensor Problem

Okay, I'm officially losing my mind with this rain-light sensor. Here's the deal: I'm getting an error stored in the error memory, no automatic wiping when it rains (super annoying!), the headlights won't switch on automatically, and get this – the speedometer dimming isn't working either. The lights are always on. I've been digging around online, and I'm seeing some stuff about bubbles forming under the gel pad of the windshield affecting car components and rain detection. Anyone else run into this auto sensor problem?

Summary of the thread

The Mini Countryman Hybrid is experiencing issues with its rain-light sensor, leading to problems such as non-functional automatic wipers, headlights not switching on automatically, and speedometer dimming failure. The core problem is identified as bubbles forming under the gel pad of the windshield, which interferes with the sensor's ability to detect rain and light levels. The suggested solution is to have a workshop inspect and potentially replace the sensor and gel pad, which successfully resolved the issues in this case.

A rain-light sensor fault can certainly cause those symptoms. The lack of automatic wiping, headlight control, and speedometer dimming all point to a central issue with the auto sensor. Have you checked the sensor itself for any visible damage or obstructions?

Thanks for the quick reply! No visible damage that I can see. I've read something about the gel pad causing issues with the car electronics. What exactly should I be looking for regarding the sensor calibration or obstructions?

Indeed, the gel pad issue is a known problem for the Mini Countryman and other vehicles using similar rain-light sensors. Bubbles forming under the gel pad can interfere with the sensor's ability to accurately detect rain and light levels. This affects the rain detection and automatic headlight functions. While sensor calibration might help temporarily, the underlying issue is the gel pad itself. I recommend having a workshop inspect the sensor and gel pad. They can confirm the presence of bubbles and advise on the best course of action, which usually involves replacing the sensor.

Just wanted to update you - you nailed it! Took my Countryman to the workshop, and they confirmed bubbles under the gel pad. They replaced the sensor, did some sensor calibration, and all the issues are gone. Total cost was 62€, which is a lot less than I feared. Thanks a million for your help!
