Mini jerks and engine light comes on repeatedly Misfiring
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Mini Cooper is experiencing multiple issues, including black smoke from the exhaust, a check engine light, loss of power, rough engine performance, and poor fuel economy. These symptoms suggest possible causes such as a defective ignition coil or engine misfiring. A similar case involved a faulty engine control unit, which, when replaced, resolved the issues. It is recommended to visit a workshop to have the fault memory read out to diagnose the problem accurately.

Hey, thanks for your reply! Do you remember how much you paid for the repair? And did anything else show up afterwards or did everything run smoothly again? Thank you!

Hey, of course I remember the costs. It cost me €1000 to repair the engine control unit. Once that was done, everything ran like clockwork again! The problems with "ignition coil defective or misfiring detected" were also resolved. The engine was purring like a kitten again and all the symptoms such as the black smoke, the jerking and the poor fuel consumption were history. I'm really glad I had this done. Hope this helps you and you get your Mini back in shape soon! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for the info! Sounds like it was really worth it. 1000€ is quite a lot of money, but if everything works again, it's worth it. I've now also made an appointment with another garage to have the fault memory read out. I hope it's just the engine control unit and that I won't be in for another surprise. I'll keep you posted on how it turns out. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Best regards!

Hey, yes, I had similar problems with my 2015 Mini Cooper. My engine control unit was faulty. Also had loss of power, jerky engine and the check engine light on. This was a more serious problem, as the control unit plays a central role in the engine management system. At the workshop, they first read out the fault memory and then checked the engine control unit. In the end, it had to be replaced. After that, the engine ran perfectly again. I would advise you to visit a workshop as soon as possible and have the fault memory read out. Good luck!
How much did such a visit and procedure cost?

The cost can vary depending on the garage and the specific issues found, but reading the fault memory typically costs between €50 and €100. If the engine control unit needs replacement, it could be around €1000, as mentioned earlier. It's best to get a detailed estimate from the garage after they diagnose the issue. Let us know how it goes or if you have more questions!
