Mini jerks and the engine light is on and it smokes black from the exhaust

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Unsteady engine

DPF regeneration failure

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2009 Mini Cooper Diesel, which now has 189876 km on it. The symptoms: Black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, check engine light on, loss of power, engine runs rough, DPF regeneration fails, and fuel consumption has increased. Could this be due to the exhaust back pressure sensor in the diesel particulate filter? I recently had a bad experience at the mechanic and wanted to ask if anyone had similar problems and how you solved them. Tips for good mechanics would also be great! Thanks a lot!

Hey, sounds like a case of "DPF heavily loaded". Had something similar with my 2012 Mini Cooper D. Symptoms were almost identical: black smoke, performance problems, and the check engine light was also constantly on. In my case, it was actually the exhaust back pressure sensor. My mechanic replaced the faulty sensor and also thoroughly cleaned the DPF. A forced regeneration was also carried out to make the particulate filter fit for future journeys. This was a more serious matter, as the clogged DPF can also affect other engine parts in the long term. Fuel consumption has also returned to normal levels. Since then, the engine has been running smoothly again without any problems. Hope this helps you! Regards

Hey, thanks for your answer! That sounds exactly like my problem. Do you remember how much you paid for the repair? And has anything else happened since then? Regards

Hey, yes, I can help you with that. In my case, the repair cost a total of €1325. That covered the replacement of the defective exhaust back pressure sensor and the thorough cleaning of the diesel particulate filter, as my DPF was heavily loaded. Since then, my Mini has been running like clockwork again and the check engine light has finally gone out. The engine is running smoothly again and fuel consumption has also normalized. So far, good luck, good luck, no further problems have occurred. I hope this helps you and you can drive your Mini again soon without any problems! Regards

Hey, thanks a lot for the information! That really helps me. I made an appointment with a mechanic near here yesterday. During the first inspection, he immediately said that it was the exhaust back pressure sensor. That made me think of your message. He also said that the DPF could be quite leaky and that a thorough cleaning and possibly a forced regeneration would be necessary. The initial cost estimates were similar to yours. I really hope that this is the solution and that I will soon be able to drive my little Cooper again without any problems. I'm curious to see if the fuel consumption will also return to normal. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Thanks again for your quick help! Regards
