Mini One Diesel Overheating

Thank you for your input I appreciate you sharing your similar experience. Regarding your questions: I did check the coolant level, and it seems fine. I haven't specifically inspected the water pump, however. Is there a reliable way to test its functionality without dismantling everything? Also, when you mention 'thermostat', are we talking about the same component? I've heard the term 'map thermostat' being used in relation to this issue.

Yes, when I say thermostat, I'm referring to the map thermostat. It's essentially the same thing. As for testing the water pump, it's tricky without proper equipment. You could try checking for any unusual noises coming from the pump area while the engine is running, but that's not always a reliable indicator. Given your symptoms and the mileage, I'd strongly suspect the thermostat first. However, considering the potential for engine damage from overheating, I'd advise against driving it too much and recommend getting it checked by a professional as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience It seems my suspicions were correct. I've taken the Mini to a trusted workshop, and they've confirmed it's indeed the thermostat. They quoted me around 350€ for the repair, which includes replacing the defective map thermostat. Hopefully, this will resolve the engine overheating and temperature control issues once and for all.

I also own a Mini One diesel and had similar symptoms not too long ago. The engine was taking ages to warm up, and I noticed the cooling fan running excessively, even on short trips. It sounds like your thermostat might indeed be the culprit. Have you checked the coolant level? A faulty thermostat can sometimes cause coolant loss, leading to engine overheating. Also, has the water pump been inspected recently? While less common, a failing water pump can also contribute to overheating issues.
