Mini One Diesel Preheating Lamp Issue

Alright, I'm having a bit of a headache with my 2008 Mini One diesel. It's got about 73895 km on the clock. The preheating lamp on the dash just won't switch off, the check engine light is now on, and it's puffing out smoke when I accelerate. Could this be a simple fix, or am I looking at something serious? I've read a bit about it, and could it be the glow control unit?

Sounds like a faulty glow plug control unit. Does the smoke smell rich? Have you checked the unit's connections for corrosion or loose wires? A diagnostic scan might pinpoint the issue.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say 'diagnostic scan', do you mean just plugging in an OBD2 reader? And if it is the control unit, is that something I could replace myself, or am I better off taking it to a garage?

Yes, an OBD2 reader should give you a fault code related to the preheating system. Given the symptoms, especially the smoke and check engine light, a faulty control unit is probable. While replacement is possible DIY, without diagnostic tools to confirm and clear codes, a workshop visit is advisable for proper diesel engine car maintenance.

Just wanted to let you know I got it sorted! Turns out it was exactly what you suspected – a defective glow control unit. The garage replaced it, and the total cost was 95€. Thanks again for your help!
