Mini One heavy steering and vibration issue

I've got a weird issue with my 2013 Mini One. The steering has become really heavy, feels like the power steering is failing, and the steering wheel is vibrating, almost shaking at times. I've read somewhere that it could be a defective steering angle sensor, and the coding might be off. Anyone else had this problem? Could this be related to any other automotive sensors?

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Mini One is experiencing heavy steering and vibration issues, suspected to be due to a failing power steering system. A potential cause identified is a defective steering angle sensor, possibly with incorrect coding. The solution involves checking the sensor's connections for loose wires or corrosion and potentially recoding the sensor. Ultimately, professional diagnosis and repair resolved the issue, confirming the steering angle sensor as the problem.

Sounds like a faulty steering angle sensor, I had a similar issue on my Mini One. Was the steering heavy, almost like the power steering had given up? Did it also feel like it was vibrating, especially at lower speeds? I'd check the connections to the sensor first. It's part of the steering column and communicates with the electronic stability program. Have you had a wheel alignment recently? Sometimes that can throw things off. Is the car throwing any warning lights?

Yeah, the steering is heavy, especially when parking, and the vibrating is driving me nuts! Where exactly is this steering angle sensor located? Is it something I can get to without taking the whole steering column apart? And what do you mean by 'check the connections'? What am I looking for?

Yep, sounds like the same thing I experienced. The sensor is part of the steering column, you can see it, but getting to it is tricky without the right tools. By 'check the connections', I mean look for loose wires or corroded terminals going into the sensor. But honestly, if you're not super comfortable with automotive electrics, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose it and recode the sensor if needed. It's linked to the electronic stability system, so you don't want to mess things up further. Better safe than sorry, right?

Alright, just wanted to give you a heads up. Took the Mini to the shop, and you were spot on. The steering angle sensor was indeed the culprit. They recoded it, and everything is working perfectly now. Cost me 195€, but well worth it to have the power steering back and the shaking gone. Thanks a bunch for your help!
