Mini Paceman Battery Issues

My 2016 Mini Paceman diesel is giving me headaches. The vehicle battery keeps getting heavily discharged. I get an error message in the speedometer, the lights are weak and flickering, and there's an error stored in the error memory. Starting the engine is also difficult. I suspect a defective battery sensor. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Mini Paceman diesel is experiencing battery issues, including heavy discharge, weak and flickering lights, and difficulty starting. The problem is suspected to be a defective battery sensor, as indicated by an error message. It is suggested to have the battery sensor checked and possibly replaced by a professional, as it could be misreporting the battery's state of charge. After replacement, the issue was resolved.

The symptoms you describe are quite similar to an issue I encountered some time ago with my Skoda. The car battery was constantly being drained. Have you checked the battery's voltage? A discharged battery can cause all sorts of electrical gremlins. It could be a faulty voltage regulator or even a parasitic draw somewhere in the system. Battery charging might help temporarily, but if the underlying issue isn't resolved, it will happen again.

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked the voltage myself, but the error memory mentioned a battery sensor. Could that be the culprit? And if so, would replacing it solve the problem or are there other things I should consider?

Yes, a faulty battery sensor could very well be the cause. In my case, it was misreporting the battery's state of charge, which led to overcharging and eventual battery failure. Given that the error memory points to it, I would suggest having it checked by a professional. Replacing the sensor might fix it, but it's best to confirm there aren't any other issues before proceeding. A workshop should be able to diagnose it properly.

Just wanted to give an update. It was indeed the battery sensor. The workshop confirmed it and replaced it. Cost me 315€. Everything seems fine now. Thanks for the help.
