Mini Paceman Camshaft Sensor Issue

Alright, so my 2015 Mini Paceman is giving me fits. It's got a gasoline engine. Starts poorly, stalls out at idle sometimes, and the check engine light is on. The mechanic thinks it's a defective camshaft sensor, anyone else had this issue or have any ideas?

That sounds frustrating! A faulty camshaft sensor can definitely cause those issues. Have you checked the crankshaft sensor as well? Sometimes a failing crankshaft sensor can mimic those symptoms, and the engine control might be getting confused by the bad data from the camshaft sensor.

The crankshaft sensor is that a common problem with these engines too? And where is it located?

Yes, it could also be the crankshaft sensor, but given the stalling and the check engine light, camshaft sensor failure is the more likely cause. It's probably feeding incorrect data to the engine control unit. I'd still recommend getting it checked out by a workshop.

Just wanted to update you the camshaft sensor was indeed the culprit. Turns out the encoder wheel on the camshafts was defective, just like the mechanic suspected. Got it sorted out at the workshop, but cost me 695€. Thanks for your help!
