Mini Paceman Diesel Engine Trouble

I am experiencing a malfunction with my 2014 Mini Paceman diesel. The check engine light is illuminated, and the engine is running rough. Car diagnostics indicate a water sensor malfunction with an error stored in the error memory. Could a defective cable or plug connection be the culprit? Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

Diagnostics indicate a water sensor malfunction, possibly due to a defective cable or plug connection. The issue was resolved by addressing an electrical fault related to the water sensor's cable or plug, confirmed by car diagnostics, leading to a smooth-running engine after repair.

That sounds frustrating. I had a similar sensor issue with my old Volvo a while back. Check engine light, the whole nine yards. For me, it turned out to be a corroded connector on the sensor. Have you had a look at the wiring and connectors going to the water sensor? Any signs of damage or corrosion? Did the car diagnostics point to a specific fault code?

Okay, if you're not comfortable poking around with the wiring, I'd advise against it. Like messing with a live wire, you can cause more harm than good. Given the error codes and your symptoms, it's very likely a sensor issue as suspected. Best bet is to take it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose and repair the electrical fault. It sounds like you're already on the right track though.

Thanks for the quick response. I haven't had a chance to inspect the wiring myself. I am not experienced with auto electronics. Where exactly is the water sensor located in the Mini Paceman's engine compartment? Is it easily accessible, or would I need to remove other components to get to it?

Thank you for sharing your experience and the advice. It appears you were spot on. I had the Paceman at the workshop today. Turns out it was indeed an electrical fault related to the water sensor's cable or plug connection. The car diagnostics confirmed the malfunction indicator was triggered by this sensor issue. Total repair cost was 95€ including VAT. Now the engine runs smoothly again. Appreciate your help!
