The rough idle is definitely noticeable when the engine is cold, now that you mention it. And the preheating lamp doesn't turn off at all. How long did it take you to figure out it was the glow plugs?

It was pretty quick, I checked for the error codes and after that I suspected it was the glow plugs. If the preheating lamp is constantly on, and you've got a rough idle, especially when it's cold, and you're getting error codes, it's very likely. Best to get it checked out at a workshop, they can confirm which glow plug is defective and replace it.

Took the Mini Paceman to the shop. Turns out it was indeed a faulty glow plug. 440€ later, and the preheating lamp is behaving itself. Thanks for the help!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Countryman. The check engine light was on, and it was throwing codes related to engine combustion. Does it have a rough idle when it's cold? The diesel car engine was struggling a bit at first. For me, it was also the glow plugs. It's like when one bad apple spoils the bunch, or in this case, a bad glow plug messes with the engine management.
