Mini Paceman Diesel Issue Preheating Lamp and Smoke

Alright, I've got a bit of a head scratcher with my 2013 Mini Paceman diesel. The preheating lamp isn't switching off, the check engine light is on, and I'm seeing some smoke when accelerating. The diagnostic test points to a defective glow control unit, and I'm suspecting a bad cable or plug connection to the component. Could this also lead to engine misfire?

That sounds familiar! My Mini Paceman diesel had similar symptoms a while back. Engine light kept popping up, and I noticed some smoke on acceleration. Did you try checking the glow plugs themselves? I remember reading that a faulty glow plug can sometimes cause the control unit to throw errors. Have you scanned for error codes?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the glow plugs individually yet, I'll add that to the list. Yes, I did a diagnostic test, and it's throwing a 'glow control unit defective' code. That's what made me think it's electrical. Was your error code the same? Any chance you remember exactly what fixed your issue?

Yep, same error code. I tried a few things myself, but honestly, in the end, I just took it to a workshop. They sorted it pretty quickly, said it was a dodgy connection to the glow control unit causing all the problems. They sorted the connection issue and it fixed the engine light and the smoke. I'd recommend getting it checked professionally, especially if you're seeing smoke – you don't want to risk damaging the diesel engine.

Just wanted to update you. Took it to a workshop, and you were spot on! Turns out the cable connector to the glow control unit was faulty, just like you said. They replaced it, did a quick diagnostic test to clear the engine light, and all seems good now. Cost me about 95€, which I think is reasonable. Thanks a lot for the help!
